São Cléofas 1 of 2

São Cléofas is a new church recently built in a little settlement called Novo Horzionte {New Horizons}. The church is one of the furthest away at over two hours from the town on a very bad road. It is a very active community and are justifiably proud of their new church.

First Project Completed ~ New Parish Kitchen

Thanks to Fyffes for the help in building a new kitchen in the Parish Dormitories. The old kitchen with its wooden walls and dirt floor was home to, I think, half of Brazil's wild insect life!!!

The parish runs a male and female dormitory which is used to house people who come into town from the Settlements. Often they are in for a parish gathering or training course. Sometimes we house the men of the roads. During a recent bad rain storm bridges were flooded out so we opened the dormitories to house some stranded shoppers.

The new kitchen has tiled floors and walls for easier cleaning and a new ceiling. The women cleaners are delighted with the tiles. It was built under an existing roof. The eating area outside the Dormitories was also tiled for easier cleaning.

The old kitchen ~ before.

No windows just shutters, dirt floor and wooden walls and no ceiling.

The demolished kitchen with the Dormitories doors clearly seen on the left.

The work men working on the new kitchen showing the new brick wall in construction.

The finished kitchen, with its tiled floor and wall, three new windows, two new sinks and a new ceiling. Now if we could only encourage the ladies to replace the dirty wooden table for a stainless steel one. Of course it would be expensive as it would have to be shipped up from Sao Paulo.

The eating area was tiled as well. The women are delighted with it as it makes life a lot easier for them. These facilities will be used almost every weekend.

THANKS FYFFES!

Annual Assembly 2007 in São Paulo

Each year all the "Kiltegan" Priest's and Volunteers meet for an Annual Assembly in the Central House in São Paulo. This year it was held the week following Easter Sunday.
Paudie, Derek and I made the long journey from Mato Grosso and Tony flew in from Recife. The two African students made the journey down from their Language School in Brasilia, the same school I went to last year. The rest of the lads are living and working in the greater São Paulo area. The leader of the group Fr. Tommy Hayden (Member of Kiltegan Leadership Team) came out from Ireland to direct proceedings. Two Religious Sisters made the way from their respective parts of Brazil to help out and share their experience of Inter-Cultural Living.
This year the theme followed on from last year's theme of "Inter-Cultural Living." This was made more important for the Kiltegan lads as they ordained their first African Members of the society earlier this year. This was one of the reasons the Annual Assembly was later this year as some of the lads went to Africa for the Ordinations and to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Kiltegan's first mission in Africa and the world. Some of the lads here have also worked in Africa.

A picture of the group taken by yours truly. The two women are religious sisters, one (right) is American {Holy Rosary Sisters} and the other (left) is Brazilian {Medical Missionaries of Mary}, both of whom helped in our deliberations. The student on the left is from Kenya and the one in the middle is from Nigeria and is coming to work with us in Castanheira after his Language School in June. Fr. Tommy Hayden came out from Ireland (center wearing a very African shirt)

Society Member Fr. Neil Cromby from Scotland led Mass on one of the days.

The congregation in the little oratory in the Central House came from many different cultures and countries: Nigeria, Kenya, Ireland North & South, USA, Scotland, and Brazil.

Feliz Páscoa / Happy Easter

Feliz Páscoa / Happy Easter

"Resurrection of Christ and Women at the Tomb" by FRA ANGELICO, 1440-41
Fresco, 189 x 164 cm Convento di San Marco, Florence

Carrying the Pascal Candle from the Pascal Fire through the streets of Castanheira to the Church last night at the Celebration of The Easter Vigil.

This little lad told me he would show the new priest the way to the church, so he had as much right to be up front as anyone had. As far as he was concerned he was bringing the Light of Christ into the church too!

"This is the day which was made by the Lord:

let us rejoice and be glad."

Alleluia, alleluia.

Good Friday Celebrations 2007 1/7

Our Good Friday service started at 4pm in the hall next to the church of Santa Rita and continued with the "real" stations of the cross through the streets of Castanheira. The Crucifixion scene took place in the parish hall next to the main church of Santo Antonio and then the service ended in the church at 715pm. The "Joven" {Youth Club} provided the character acting for the Way of The Cross.
Santa Rita Church and local hall.

Some of the crowd gathering for the Good Friday Service.

After the opening prayer and readings of Good Friday the Gospel Narrative was acted out. Here Jesus is arrested in The Garden.
And so Jesus carrying his cross leads us on the way of the cross.

It had rained an hour before hand but thankfully not for long.

A local man is pulled from the crowd to be Simon of Cyrene and help Jesus.

A view of the crowd. It was a much larger crowd this year it seems.

Good Friday Celebrations 2007 4/7

At each of the stations along the route the locals set up a little altar that caught the eye of these curious youngsters.

Now we are on the Main Street of Castanheira.

A quiet Main Street, the Military Police closed it for the procession. It really wasn't hard to close it as Good Friday is a full Bank Holiday here in Brazil. {Thbe procession was behind me!}.

Jesus Meets Veronica who wipes his face of the blood and sweat.

Always ready for a smile and a photo.

Jesus dies on the cross and we all kneel to pray.
