Festa Nossa Senhora Aparecida 2007

On October 12Th last we celebrated the Feast of Nossa Senhora Aparecida, Patron Saint of Brazil. Just like our St. Patrick's Day, it was a bank holiday and an excuse to celebrate. We celebrated with two nights of dancing and a big parish barbecue and local version of a a parish field day.

About 6 am the local women came in to prepare the food and in the big blue basin, "the potato salad." Some of the women are sorting the rice grain by grain, removing bad grains and insects.

The meat is put on the barbecue.

The meat all laid out on the skewers. The people coming to the barbecue send some one up early to choose and buy the meat which is ten cooked for them an was ready by mid-day when all the family arrived for the Festa.

All sold, now it is either a "bloody sacrifice" or "a burnt offering"!!!!

L-R: Derek (Parish Priest), myself (Suffering curate) and Padre Raimundo (Vicar General of the diocese - 2ND in command and not yet two years ordained. Promotion comes quickly here!)

The kids trying their luck at a fishing stall.

Everything is bigger here in the Amazon Forest. Even the mice are the size of hamsters!! He is put under the cardboard box, The house numbers are sold. The box is raised and he darts into one of the houses. The winner is the person with the the right house number. One of the houses is a church and if he darts into there no one wins. This gives new meaning to the church granting sanctuary.

The second night of dancing is warming up. The first night the dance started at 9 pm and ended at about 3 am the next morning with the dance floor full the whole time. The second night it started about 7 pm and ended around midnight. The Brazilians love to dance.
