Nossa Senhora Amparo

"Nossa Senhora Amparo" is a church and community in the middle of newly invaded land {Political correction here says I should use "occupation" not "invasion"}. As you see from the pictures the church was built in a clearing in the forest and the people live off the land and forest in the surrounding area. "Amparo" means "help" or "support", so the church is called "Our Lady of Help" in English. The community is one of the furthest away that I can can get there and back in the one day. And that includes staying for lunch!

Waitng for Mass

Mother and Child. Marriage takes place here at a very young age. This mother is also the choir mistress, while the baby creates havoc.

The womans side of the church - old traditions die hard here.
